Who makes the least reliable cars? What are the brands?
Which car brands make the least reliable cars? Do the preconceived ideas we have about the various car companies have anything to do with the reality on the ground. Some of us are of the opinion that car brands from one country or another produce cars that break down faster than cars built by other car brands. In order to shed light on this case, the car rental office PHP Rent a Car Cluj Napoca set out to collect the information provided by the warranty providers for second-hand cars and then make a ranking. The information collected from the second-hand warranty providers includes the defects that occurred, their severity, the duration of the service as well as the related costs and then using this information each car manufacturer received a percentage reliability score. In this ranking car brands are ranked from the highest percentage to the lowest percentage and only include used cars that are out of the car manufacturer's warranty. A number of over 300 thousand cars were included in this assessment and their average age was nine years. Each car brand had to have at least 400 cars present on the warranty providers' lists to ensure that the sample was large enough for a fair assessment, which is why the Jeep brand was not included. So which car brands build the least reliable cars?
We start this ranking with the most reliable of the least reliable car brands, it is called Opel and it occupies the 14th position in our ranking with a reliability score of 65% out of 100. In this study, a number of almost 25 thousand Opel cars were evaluated such as the previous generations of the Insignia, Corsa or Zafira models. The average cost for the repair of these cars amounts to 640 euros.
The 13th place is not unlucky for the French Citroen brand which recently, following a merger, became part of the Franco-Italian American manufacturer Stellantis. With a reliability score of 64% out of 100 it seems that the Citroen brand produces more reliable cars than all German brands. The cars that were included in this study are the previous generations of the C4 Picasso, C1, C3 or C5 models. A number of 7,000 Citroen brand cars were evaluated in this study and when they break down, the average cost of repairing them amounts to 650 euros.
The German VW brand is in 12th place in this ranking with a reliability score of 63 percent out of 100. In this study, almost 20 thousand VW cars such as the previous generations of the Golf, Polo, Passat, Tiguan or Tuareg models were evaluated. When they break, the average cost to repair the defects amounts to 800 euros.
The Spanish brand Seat occupies the 11th place in our ranking. It is owned by the German car manufacturer Volkswagen and achieved a reliability score of 62% out of 100. A total of 3500 Seat cars were evaluated in this study, such as the previous generations of the Alhambra, Leon or Ibiza models. The average cost for repairing defects that appear in these cars amounts to 750 euros.
In 10th place is the English brand Mini, also known as Mini One or Mini Cooper, which belongs to the car manufacturer BMW. It received a reliability score of 60 percent out of 100. In this study, 8 thousand Mini cars such as the previous generations of the Hatch, Clubman or Countryman models were evaluated. When one of these cars broke down, the warranty providers had to pay an average of €900 to fix it.
Mitsubishi is in 9th place which is a surprise for PHP Rent a Car Cluj Napoca agency because Japanese cars are believed to be among the most reliable in the world, but it seems that not all Japanese car manufacturers are reliable brands. In this study, a number of 1200 Mitsubishi cars such as the previous generations of ASX, Mirage or Lancer models were analyzed and it seems that they are not very reliable. The average cost to repair defects on these cars was 1100 euros which is a bit expensive considering that these are not expensive cars to begin with. In the end the Mitsubishi received a reliability score of 56% out of 100.
The 8th place belongs to the German car brand Mercedes which receives a reliability score of 56 percent out of 100. A total of 12 thousand Mercedes cars were evaluated in this study, cars such as the previous generations of C Class, E Class, S Class models, GLA, GLC or GLE. For the repair of defects in these cars, the warranty providers paid an average of just over 1,000 euros.
The 7th place in our ranking is occupied by the German car brand BMW, which achieved a score of 53 percent in terms of the reliability of its cars. Almost 20 thousand BMW cars such as the previous generations of the 3 Series, 5 Series, 7 Series, X3 or X5 models were evaluated in this study. The average cost for repairing the defects that appear in these cars amounts to 1220 euros.
On the 6th place we meet another German manufacturer, Audi which obtained a reliability score of 53 percent out of 100, the same as BMW. A number of 15 thousand Audi cars were included in this study, such as the previous generations of the A4, A6, A8, Q5 or Q7 models. When these cars break down, the average cost to repair them is 1100 euros.
Reliability problems, or the lack of reliability, of Italian Alfa Romeo cars is well known to drivers and information from the field confirms this. This Italian car brand received a reliability score of 53 percent out of 100 which ranks it 5th on our list. In this study, a number of 1000 Alfa Romeo cars were evaluated, such as the previous generations of the Giulietta, MiTo or 159 models. The average cost for repairing defects in these cars is 810 euros.
In 4th place is the American car manufacturer Chevrolet. In this study, a number of 800 Chevrolet cars were evaluated and they include the previous generations of the Lacetti, Spark or Captiva models that did not show themselves to be very reliable. For some cars with a low starting price they proved quite expensive to repair. Repairing defects that occur in Chevrolet cars costs on average a little over 1000 euros. So Chevrolet receives a reliability score of 53 percent out of 100. Thus four car brands, BMW, Audi, Alfa Romeo and Chevrolet have the same score of 53 percent. The question arises, why were they ranked in this order? Because when it's a tie like this, car brands are differentiated by how long it takes to repair the fault and how old the car was when it broke down. For example, if the defect occurs when the car is older then it will receive a higher score than when the car is newer.
At this moment we have entered the podium area and the third step belongs to the English car brand Jaguar which is owned by the Indian company Tata Motors. Jaguar achieved a reliability score of 51 percent out of 100. A total of 2,500 Jaguar cars were evaluated in this study and these include previous generations of the XK sports models, XF or XJ sedans. Repairing defects in these cars costs 1150 euros on average.
We would not have expected this, but the German brand Porsche is on the second step of the podium of the least reliable car brands. We had the impression that Porsche builds the most reliable German cars, but it seems that reality contradicts us. Almost 2,000 Porsche cars were evaluated in this study, which included the previous generations of the Cayenne, Macan, Panamera or Carrera 911 models. According to warranty providers, the average repair cost for a Porsche is 1,750 euros. Even though this amount is higher than the Land Rover, defects occur less frequently and therefore the Porsche receives a reliability score of 40% out of 100.
On the first place of the podium of the least reliable car brands in the ranking of the PHP Rent a Car Airport Avram Iancu Cluj Napoca company is the English car manufacturer Land Rover. Even though it is owned like Jaguar by Tata Motors which is an Indian company, the Land Rover is an English brand. Land Rover obtained the lowest reliability score, this is 38% out of 100. Within this ranking, 9300 Land Rover cars such as previous generations of Discovery, Evoque or Range Rover models were evaluated. Repairing defects in these cars cost an average of 1,400 euros.
In the end we can draw the conclusion that the English and German car brands are not very good in terms of the reliability of the cars they produce. We must mention that the reliability of a car can vary from one model to another, even within the same brand, and thus the PHP Rent a Car Airport Cluj rental office recommends that you look for reviews and consumer ratings for the car models that suit you. interests to get a more accurate picture of their reliability and maintenance costs. You can also check the reliability ratings and quality reports of specialized car testing organizations.
